This week I have enjoyed working on my potted herb garden. Some herbs have gone back outside since we have warmer temperatures and I have also planted some new herbs, from both plants and seeds. Right now I have a very happy rosemary plant, who seems to prefer being indoors in front of the bay window. Outside, I have parsley, basil, cilantro, 2 types of mint, lemon balm, and lavender. And then today I just planted some chamomile seeds. I love herb bouquets and also cokking with herbs. Do you grow any herbs? Do you have favorites for cooking?
Posted by Hannah at April 6, 2005 03:15 PMi'm new to cooking with herbs, so we bought one of those rotating thingies with like 16 herbs to choose from and i'm learning!
Posted by: letti at April 6, 2005 04:31 PMWe grow basil, parsley, rosemary, thyme, and cilantro, with mixed success. Our rosemary seems to thrive regardless of weather, but some of the more delicate herbs haven't liked all these rainstorms we've had in Northern California this winter. I love fresh herbs and use them as much as I can. Nothing's better than fresh summer tomatoes with whole basil leaves, a good mozzarella di bufala, and extra-virgin olive oil. Hurry, summer!
Posted by: Arin at April 6, 2005 05:33 PMLast year, I had parsley, dill (it died quickly, couldn't get it to prosper), sage, rosemary, and mint. I actually didn't use them much for cooking! I never wanted to pick them. Silly, right?
This year I wanted to start over with a potted herb garden, opposed to planting them in the ground. Then I won't have to worry about my dog peeing on them in secret :)
Last night, I made a delicious Thai stir fry with broccoli, chicken, bell peppers, onions, and fresh green beans. It was DELICIOUS! Anyway, I wanted to take a picture and post it (like you do) but forgot. I told my best friend (Mary Kate is what I always call her on my blog) about your blog today while we were at Subway, and how you inspired me to cook an ethnic meal as opposed to our usual boring chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad meal. Just thought I'd share :)
Posted by: girl from florida at April 6, 2005 07:58 PMI have such a brown thumb that I have even killed cactus! Mu husband has since banned me from bringing any more plants into our home. [sigh!] He loves to cook with herbs, so we just buy them from the market, but I do wish that I could get the hang of growing my own!
Posted by: little things at April 6, 2005 10:23 PMYum, I love fresh herbs. Even better when they're from your own garden. I grew basil, oregano, and something else once upon a time, didn't produce too much. I would love to have a real herb garden, one that I can work on a little more one day as I'm always cooking with lots of herbs.
Posted by: Pink Sun Drops at April 7, 2005 02:19 AMI have been wanting to start potting herbs to grow, but have never gotten around to it. I would want to grow basil, mint, cilantro, catnip, rosemary and dill for starters.
Basil is probably one of my favorite herbs so that would be my first! I LOVE to grow and smell rosemary but i don't care for it in food too much so it would just be for looks and smells. Catnip would, ofcourse, be for the kitty babies.
Posted by: Allison at April 7, 2005 10:06 AMYou have such good questions Hannah! Favorite herbs are Oregano and Tarragon. I tried three times unsuccessfully to grow herbs and each time I killed them. I think I overwatered. I feel so bad about that. I got a tip to put pebbles before adding dirt and that might solve my problem. They are so delicate, I hope it works.
Posted by: ani at April 7, 2005 12:03 PMThe only one I grow right now is Golden Oregano!
Posted by: Linda at April 7, 2005 03:41 PMI don't think I could function without fresh basil and dill, so those willl be going in at some point. The oregano I planted last fall (from my MIL's plant) is coming up and looks great, I don't see my mint, but I know it's there, and I hope to get some chives from my mom this year too. In addition, I want to try tarragon and cilantro.
Posted by: Carol at April 8, 2005 10:09 AMI love to garden. I currently grow lavender, rosemary, thyme, lemon balm, oregano and mint. Will be adding chamomile (for tea), basil and dill this year when the weather permits. Just started a whole bunch of vegetable/flower seeds. It was nice to hear what others are growing. :)
