When I first started my blog, I told everyone and anyone about it. I was so excited. I thought these babies were the best thing since sliced bread-- still do. My family started to read it and many of my friends too. Back then, I never knew what to write, so I usually ended up choosing impersonal topics about stuff like food, weekend plans, etc. Now that I'm settled into having a blog, it is has become my oulet. I have gotten much more bold in my writing and sometimes it'd be nice to be just plain anonymous. I write about the horrors I sometimes face at my job, my feelings about people. Just the other day I wanted to write something about my boobs, but I worried someone I knew might be reading. My family has commented on things I have written, so I know they read occasionally. Sometimes I feel like saying a bad word (oops) but wonder if I should (I probably shouldn't anyway). I'm not smart enough to check to see where people live who are reading, just to know if any co-workers have discovered my little secret. I open my blog at work, so you never know . . .
One person I know who doesn't often read is my hubby. He knows I tell him about anything worth writing on my blog, so I guess he figures he isn't missing much. In fact, I am thoroughly convinced that I could've been writing about a passionate affair for the last 6 months and he'd be none the wiser. I knew this one girl whose husband didn't even know she had a blog, so when she suddenly stopped writing and disappeared, no one was able to post as to where she had gone. I still worry because she had some health problems. Some of you may know to whom I am referring.
Some of you I know in real life (or have met you), others have become dear friends through the blogging world and we communicate often. Some of you, well, I don't even know your real names, but I love ya anyway!
I am curious, how anonymous are you in the blog world? Do you share your name (first and last)? Do you just go by a screen name? Does your spouse or family know about your blog?
This should be fun to answer!
Posted by Hannah at March 1, 2006 01:25 PMI have never posted my name on my blog. I dont want someone (mainly coworkers) to google my name and find my blog. I do however use my real name when I respond to a comment. Hannah, you know my real name, so Im sure you can understand that a google search using my real name would definetly bring someone to my blog if I used my name on my blog. That's the problem with a rare name! A few years ago, Maybe 5 years ago, I would get only about 50 google hits if I searched for my name and they were mostly foreign sites. Now? Its like 900 hits. Which obiously is still way less than most names, but still.
Yep, my husband knows about and very rarely reads my blog. I will however instruct him how to post for when the baby comes. I dont want people to be left in the dark for long stretches of time.
Jason's family does not know about my blog. Im not opposed to them knowing, but Im not going to edit myself more than I feel I already do. So if I tell them about my blog one day, it will come with warnings of possible bad language and stuff about hubby and I that they might not want to know! :)
I think I'm a bit weird with my blog. I'm not anonymous...a Google search of my name will point you to it. However, I don't tell a lot of people I know in real-life about it. Not sure why. It's like a dirty little secret, but without the dirt. My husband knows it exists and is not thrilled with the idea, but he has only visited it a few times and has accepted it as a forum for me to share my bizarre ramblings, which is better than his ear somedays.
Posted by: Christina at March 1, 2006 02:06 PMMy hubby knows about it... but could careless about reading it lol... but my family and people that live near me have no idea... because I vent about them on it lol... mahahahaha...
Posted by: Shannon O. at March 1, 2006 02:41 PMAnonymous...hubby knows about it but doesnt read it...
Posted by: dazed at March 1, 2006 03:07 PMSince I just "opened" my blog back up to the public, I have two tests: 1. Would I tell this to my mom and brother? 2. Would I tell this to my co-workers? If yes to both, then I can/will write it. I sometimes wish I could be more personal, but that has always screwed me. If I create a more "personal" place to write, I find that I don't want anybody I know reading it, so I should just stay completely anonymous. My husband reads just about every day. I don't use my last name anywhere on the site but I basically figure that anybody in the whole world could be reading.
Posted by: Laura at March 1, 2006 03:16 PMHmm, you can't find mine by my name but some people know where it is. My husband reads it.
Posted by: Rachel at March 1, 2006 05:21 PMI use my real first name but not the last. I feel that it would be dishonest in some way to have the blog and not tell my husband, since random strangers would be reading. He designed my template actually. He's the only person in my real life that knows about it, except one guy I went to college with found it shortly after I started blogging. He doesn't know anyone I know in real life though. I just don't want my family, friends, coworkers, etc. to know about it just in case I do decide to vent a little.
Posted by: Chastity at March 1, 2006 05:50 PMpeople can find my blog through googling my name. there are pluses and minuses to being known through your blog. i've met many nice people and made good friends through it. some folks who know me in real life keep up with me and my life here in the states through the blog. sometimes i use it to vent but mostly i write because i can refer to it somewhere down the road - either for a recipe, a verse or just what i've been up to. no one at work knows cos i rant about work on it...mike reads it at least once a day :) and you, my dear, i met through my blog so i'm thoroughly thankful.
Posted by: stef at March 1, 2006 06:45 PMWell... I usually use my blog to keep in touch with my friends back home. so they know. My sisters know and they blog too but my parents dont know. M knows but couldnt be bothered reading it. I use my first name only but most of the people i know and met thru here knows my last name. :*)
Posted by: feli at March 1, 2006 08:24 PMI was more anonymous at first, but decided a while back to put my entire first name on my blog. Believe me, that was a BIG deal coming from someone who freaked out when I went into a chat room and was called, er, written to, by name. I'm still relatively anonymous, sometimes don't even put my blog url on comments, but since I usually frequent the same blogs over and over, I feel a little more comfortable saying who I am.
When I first learned about blogging, I stumbled upon a girl with an online journal that I was reading with great frequency. She fascinated me the choices she'd made in her life that I would never consider. Seat of her pants kind of stuff that my husband said she made up. When she stopped writing I worried about her and her little girl. I still do sometimes, mainly because her little girl is around Joaquin's age. I really wished them the best.
Posted by: Elaine at March 2, 2006 02:00 AMI use my name on my Kitchen blog, but on the other blogs that i have, i use my initials.
My family know about the blog, but they seldom read it! My husband reads it daily though.
I don't use my real name. My hubby knows about it, but doesn't read it at all. He's not very good with computers, i don't think he even knows how to do online banking. hehe.
Only one person in my family knows about it and it's my oldest daughter, (10 in april) so she likes to come online and see what's new on my blog. So gotta be careful with all i say even if i would like to vent about family (ie. inlaws)
Posted by: Emmakirst at March 2, 2006 07:43 AMi only use my first name on my blog. my fiance reads it often, even though he normally knows what i'm blogging about anyway.
Posted by: cady at March 2, 2006 07:46 AMAnonymous, totally. I've offered several times to let my hubby read it, although he usually just looks at my picture posts :) I tell him everything I write about, anyway. He's says it's my "thing."
I love being anonymous... I still tend to watch what I say more than if I were, say, chatting with a girlfriend, because you just never know. But I don't feel self conscious writing about personal issues either.
HOWEVER, I've thought many times how nice it would be to start a blog for my family and friends to read! One where I could post pictures of my face and my friends!!
Posted by: girl from florida at March 2, 2006 09:36 AMI don't like to share my name(there are a lot of wierdos out there) but it wouldn't be hard to find. My husband started to blog first and he's gotten me and his friends into blogging. It's a nice outlet. I don't write about personal stuff much. I like to write about hobbies. Things that keep me positive. I don't like to write about doom and gloom. Most of it would be about work or my annoying as hell brother in law or my husban'd friends. Uch.
Posted by: Ani at March 2, 2006 10:46 AMI am a very confused person when it comes to my blog being anonymous or completely open. I kind of mix the two. I use an alias (Dillygirl) on my blog because I don't want people to find my blog by searching for my name. I also like to share pictures of myself and talk about where I live, so I figure keeping my name a secret cuts down on the chance of some freak-o stalking me.
My hubby reads my blog occasionally (about once every-other month) and my family and friends all know about my blog. My mom and grandma read it all the time. I guess I just keep my name a secret to avoid complete and total vulnerability. I'm actually a very open and non-private person, but it waould scare the heck out of me if a reader showed up on my doorstep, you know?
Ok. Long answer.
