Thank you those of you who responded to my post yesterday. Your answers were very helpful because 1) I now know it's normal for Olivia not to have scheduled naps yet, and 2) because she is so young, there is still hope she'll turn into a nap-taker!
And now for another question-- a rather personal one. You don't mind, do you?
I have been trying to decide what mehod of birth control to use. My OBGYN prescribed a mini pill-- a pill made of only progesterone, but I have mixed feelings taking anything that's going to put hormones in my milk, even if it is considered "safe". I haven't taken it yet. However, I am left with few other options. We considered natural family planning coupled with the fact that I'm breastfeeding exclusively and still don't have my period, but I know this is not full-proof. James says it's ok if I get pregnant again, but we also know that it's healthier to wait. Besides, ideally, we want to wait a while. I'm scared of IUD's, and I'm just wondering, what are the best options?
I know many of you just had babies, and if you feel comfortable sharing, what are you doing?
Posted by Hannah at June 17, 2006 11:48 PMI've been taking the mini pill for about 3 weeks now, and to be honest have noticed a bit of a decrease in my milk supply (which was luckily VERY abundant so it didn't matter). I am going in for my IUD on Monday. I am really excited and will post about the experience. Allison (Allie Marie on my blogroll) really convinced me to get it- she loves hers! SO many moms on my mom message boards love theirs, so I decided to give it a go. We'd like to wait a few years and allow Amelia to be a baby and the center of our attention for awhile!
That's what we're doing... I look forward to other people's input!
Posted by: girl from florida at June 18, 2006 12:02 PMMy husband and I live several thousand miles from each other. Obviously, not recommended. But it works ;)
Posted by: shokufeh at June 18, 2006 03:52 PMI got an IUD a few months ago, and so far I love it! We plan to try for one more, but not for two to three years, so this seemed like the best option for me especially given the fact that I have had problems with hormones in the past. Plus I don't have to remember anything which works well for me since I lately seem to have forgetful mommy brain! Plus it's healthiest to wait at least one to two years in between pregnancies to allow your body time to recover and prepare again.
Posted by: Mel at June 18, 2006 06:27 PMI started on the pill for breastfeeding mothers (I assume must be the same one you are talking about) about 8 weeks after my baby girl was born. I didn't have any trouble with it, and neither did she or my milk production - I nursed exclusively (no formula) for 6 months (until she got teeth and wouldn't stop biting!)
Posted by: amelia at June 18, 2006 07:03 PMI came to hear what everyone else is doing too. I am going to be dealing with this very soon. So, good question!!
Posted by: Suzy at June 18, 2006 08:07 PMThe pill isn't an option for me since my whole malabsorption problem from the crohn's (umm, that's how ava was conceived! hehe) Anyway, I use the nuvaring. So far so good, same as birth control pill except there's estrogen and progesterone in it, and I noticed a big decrease in my supply :(
Whatever decision you make good luck, but I'll tell you about the natural fertility with me, my 3rd child was conceived 7 1/2 mos after my son was born. We didn't care when she came along, we knew we wanted another child and now here we are 5 yrs later :)
Posted by: Emmakirst at June 18, 2006 08:19 PMAfter our first baby we didn't use anything. We wanted another baby and didn't care when it happened. After our second baby, I went on the minipill but I started my period and my supply went down. I went off the pill, pumped, ate oatmeal and took herbs to get my milk back. We abstained until she was off breastmilk because we both agreed it was important for her to get it.
Posted by: Amy at June 19, 2006 08:45 AMMy OB prescribed "Errin" for me ~ it's the birth control pill that's safe for breastfeeding moms. That's what I plan on taking after our daughter is born. Hope that helps!
Posted by: Lisanne at June 19, 2006 09:10 AMMy gyno asked me the same question this past Friday..."what are you going to use for birth control?"
I have tried 4 different brands of pills (ortho, yasmin, ortho tri, and desogen) all of which I hated the way they made me feel (this was years prior to pregnancy...) also tried the nuva ring for about 3 months, but that led to my first yeast infection evah (you wanted deets!) and now...using condoms. again. hate. just like high school all over again...harharhar.
Posted by: dazed at June 19, 2006 02:15 PMIt would take divine intervention for me to get pregnant again the old fashioned way, so we're obviously doing nothing. If we were using BC, however, IUDs would scare the crap out of me too. I know they used to be known for puncturing the uterus...but I think they're much safer now. Maybe a diaphram?? I have no idea.
