When I got married, my aunt gave me this advice: "Never keep a TV in your bedroom. Bedrooms are for sleeping and loving."
We actually did end up putting a TV in our bedroom, but it was rather bulky and out-of-place looking, so we gave it to my sister when we moved. Now, we're trying to decide whether or not to get another one (a smaller, nicer looking one that won't require a large stand or armoir like the last one did). James said he kind of likes not having one, but I miss not being able to watch the weather every morning to help me dress accordingly. I also miss watching shows in bed after James and Olivia are asleep, but I also see reasons for not having one. It is nice to lay in bed and talk before falling asleep rather than finishing up a show.
So, I'm wondering, do you have a TV in your bedroom?
Posted by Hannah at April 6, 2008 09:06 PMWe do have a TV in our bedroom, but it sits in an armoire and only gets turned on two or three times per year. We don't spend much time in our bedroom, so we might as well not have one. Every once in a while though, my husband will want to watch some sporting event and doesn't want to subject us to the torture.
Posted by: Chas at April 6, 2008 09:51 PMYes. It's rarely on. But has come in handy while this sick Mommy needed to rest and Sesame Street could be watched from bed.
Posted by: B at April 6, 2008 10:41 PMWe do have one, and we watch it sometimes. I tend to watch it more than my husband does - mainly because it's really small and he can't see it that well! But on the weekends, I'll take naps on our bed with food network on in the background . . . or I watch the TODAY show in the mornings . . . or watch something while folding laundry. We used to watch shows together, before we had a kid, and that was fun - we both love The Soup and SNL, so we'd watch that. We do cuddle with our son sometimes and watch Sesame Street or something with him in our bed.
No. We only have one TV in this house and it's tucked away so that MrMan doesn't even know we have it. However, I do sometimes take the laptop to bed to watch TV.
Posted by: shokufeh at April 6, 2008 11:03 PMWe do have a TV in our bedroom but it is a 13 inch flat screen. We bought a small one and put it on the corner of the dresser because we didn't want a separate piece of furniture in the bedroom for the TV. We watch it every night for about 15 minutes, just until we unwind. I could do without it because I can't stand my hubby staying up late watching the Family Guy and laughing hysterically while I have to get up at 5:00!
Posted by: Jenn at April 6, 2008 11:12 PMWe don't have a TV in our bedroom in our current house. We've had one in the past and we barely watched it or it was just annoying because my husband would be watching and I would be trying to sleep. The bedroom is one place where I can go for peace and quiet so I don't think we'll end up getting one for in there.
Posted by: A at April 7, 2008 08:01 AMWe do have a TV in our room but it doesn't get turned on as much as the other 2 in our house. We have one in our family room & one in the entertainment room/office. I agree, it is nice to have for the times when you do watch it in there. Bobby watches sports & hunting shows alot when he's home & it's nice to have that option to go to our room & watch something I want occasionally.
Posted by: Connie at April 7, 2008 08:25 AMBack in February 2006, we took the TV out of our bedroom. And that's how we got Meredith. :)
Posted by: Lisanne at April 7, 2008 09:11 AMLOL, Lisanne!
We have an ancient 13" tv in our bedroom that I used in college. I might turn it on once or twice a week when I'm getting ready for bed. I think its days are numbered, though, and I don't think we'll be replacing it. We have cut back greatly on our TV watching.
Posted by: Christina at April 7, 2008 10:44 AMGod I must be the horrible one in this bunch. We have a 27 inch TV that hangs above our dresser, and we always watch it before we go to bed. I have had a TV in my room for as long as I can remember, and I cannot sleep without it. Comfort thing if you will, but as much as I love the peace and quiet, the TV helps my mind decompress at night. My husband hates having it on, but we deal with it.
Posted by: becca at April 7, 2008 11:09 AMYes we have one. We haven't felt like it has interrupted things. But I could see both points.
Posted by: Ani at April 7, 2008 11:41 AMWhen we moved into our new house there was a tv stand mounted on the wall, so we ended up getting a second one just to fill it. We love it! We often put the Bubby to bed, then kind of look at each other in the lounge and say, "Hey, let's go watch this movie in bed instead." we end up snuggling together to watch and whoever falls asleep last turns it off with the remote. We don't use it every night, and it would drive me nuts if hubby ever tried to watch sport on it, but so far so good :)
Posted by: Rainbowfudge at April 7, 2008 12:12 PMI forgot to add that first thing in the morning Bubby comes into our room when he wakes up - and hops into bed with us - we then use Barney to 'wake up' officially to, hubby goes off to shower and Bubby and I have a nice 10 minute snuggle time before I get up to make breakfast and he goes off to play with his toys. I also put it on when I'm folding laundry and stuff since we don't have a radio in the bedroom :)
Posted by: Rainbowfudge at April 7, 2008 12:16 PMwe have one in ours and love it... Lore and I will cuddle in our bed and watch Ugly Betty and then she goes to bed... or when I don't feel good etc... I can turn on the cartoons and she will watch and i can cat nap...
Posted by: Shannon at April 7, 2008 03:39 PMWe have a tv in the bedroom but hardly watch it. We only usually watch it if we're really tired and go to bed early. I have the PS2 hooked up to it so I can watch dvd's from time to time but really the most times it's on is if one of us is in bed all day sick. :)
Posted by: Trace at April 7, 2008 04:27 PMno way!!! For the exact reason your aunt said. I've found the bedroom to be a retreat for me, because I CANNOT fall asleep with the TV on (although H could). That's just me though...
Posted by: girl from florida at April 7, 2008 05:51 PMi've always had a tv in my bedroom. we don't watch tv in their too often, but sometimes i get tired while we're watching a show, and it's nice to be able to lay in bed and watch it.
Posted by: cady at April 8, 2008 08:53 AMI used to be 100% against a tv in the bedroom. My hubby always wanted one so I finally caved and gave him one (after about 9 years) for a birthday. But it came with rules. :) It's worked out just fine really. It doesn't get used alot but it's pretty handy on occasion. The odd time we want to watch different things which happens very rarely. Or the odd time I want to finish up some laundry and one of my favourite shows is on. I also use it if the boys want to watch something while I'm taking a shower - otherwise they are so far away from me, it's hard to keep an eye on them. There - that's my story. :)
Posted by: villagegirl at April 10, 2008 04:39 PMWell I've always had a TV in my bedroom even when I was a kid... When my parents got new ones for their bedroom, I got the old one :) well I couldn't live without a TV in my bedroom.. We have a 42 inch in our room... but we only spend time in our room is at night so that's the only time we really watch it.. Unless John is downstairs playing his xbox 360, I'll go upstairs to our room and watch it....I don't see anything wrong with a TV in the bedroom... That's how we spend out nights before bed.... We watch a lil TV before bed :)
