You won't believe what this woman said to me . . .

My midwife and pediatrician let us go home from the hospital on the second day since they knew we had a toddler at home. Since we left early, we had to go back the next morning so the hospital could check Liam's bilirubin levels. As were leaving, this lady stopped to admire the baby. She commented how cute he was and asked if he was mine. I thought that was an odd question. I told her he was and she looked confused. Then she asked, "he's yours and you're already pregnant again?" I know my stomach was still big, but hello! It had only been 50 some odd hours since I gave birth! How could she think I was far enough along to be showing and have a baby that looked brand new? I explained to her that he's 2 days old and that it takes a while for the uterus to go back to its original size. She still looked confused and asked, "So you're not pregnant?" I didn't even know what to say. I should've told her I had twins and the other hadn't come out yet. :-)

Sounds like you took it better than I would. That's a crazy (or just less knowledgable) lady.

She's obviously pretty ignorant to the whole process. At least you took it like a champ...too bad you didn't think of that twin remark at the time.

UGH. Screw her!! She needs a lesson in basic science AND etiquette. I wish I'd been with you so I could bitch slap her for you.

*shakes head* Some people... I just can't believe this! It was probably a case of mouth starting before the brain was in gear, but still! She made it worse by continuing with the same line of questioning. Someone needs to teach her when to be quiet (and apologise!!) Sounds like you habdled it really graciously though, well done.

I have been the recipient of some pretty stupid remarks from people due to the way I look (I am over 30 but have such a baby face, that people can't help but ask how old I am), and I always think of something clever to say hours afterwards! I hate that! I wish I had the gift of a snappy, well-timed wit :)

OH. MY. GOODNESS.

How can she not understand that?!? And who would ask such a thing?!?

Posted by: Jessica at June 16, 2008 07:45 AM

Wow. I can't believe she pursued her line of thinking even after you corrected her.

All I can say is wow what a dummy! how did she not get it? makes ya wonder what is in that head of hers lol...

That reminds me of something funny that happened while I was still in hospital after having Flipper. Our paediatrician's back-up (one we see when he's away) came to check on Flipper, and while chatting to me, I mentioned that he was such a surprise, because I had him two weeks early - to which he replied (surprised), "Oh, so you're still scheduled for your c-section??" Of course I knew what he meant (as in - my c-section was only supposed to happen two weeks later - he was trying to calculate in his head the expected behaviour and eating patterns of my new baby at the time), so I said to him kind of sarcastically, but with a smile on my face, "um...noooo...(pointing at baby) I've *already* had it." It was kinda funny at the time. But then I was on copious amounts of drugs :)

This person obviously doesn't know what happens after having a child. Crap, it takes time for the uterus and swelling to go down. I'm sure you look great and you took that quite well. He's such a beautiful baby, congrats again.

Some people just don't think before they speak. Or just don't think...
I remember being asked when I was due about a week after I'd had my first but I didn't have him with me which probably would have clued most people in.
That twin comment would have been a riot! Glad you let it role off you.
